About the WAA

 Who We Are

The Woodlot Association of Alberta is a non-profit organization established by woodlot owners. It is run by a volunteer board of directors representing various regions in Alberta.

Our Mission

Our purpose is to promote leadership in sustainable forest management by encouraging the development of private and public forest by increasing awareness of their inherent social, economic and environmental values.

Our Goals

  • To educate the public about the inherent value of Alberta's private forests.
  • To promote private forest management in an environmentally sensitive way.
  • To facilitate education and training of members in woodlot-related activities.
  • To help members make informed decisions about their woodlots.
  • To represent members and liaise as a body with industry, government and other likeminded organizations.

Our History

In the early 1990's logging on private lands across Alberta was rampant.  Fueled by unprecedented commodity prices, private timber was being bought, sold and harvested at a rate never seen before.  Landowners were being cheated and the landscape was drastically altered.  Originating in Cochrane, Alberta a group of concerned Albertans set out to try to address the destruction.  Through the support of the Canadian Forest Service and the Alberta Government, the Woodlot Association of Alberta was established in 1995.   Since its establishment, the Association has grown in membership and influence, and has become a significant voice for private land forestry and sustainable woodlot management within Alberta.
